Peer Support at Onward Transitions: A Difference Maker in Mental Health Treatment

Current research on peer support underscores the helpful impact this adjunct to formalized mental health treatment can provide young adults struggling with debilitating issues. As many young people in their twenties struggle with feeling alone and isolated in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, in-person programs show promise in helping to reduce the frequency of treatment stays, readmission, substance use, and depressive episodes. Additionally, the use of peer text support programs has also had promising outcomes in helping young adults experience improved self-management of adverse mental health symptoms.
